2006 Meeting!

Hello WSN Students! Our apologies for not posting this information earlier (As there is now quite a bit of it) but our resident WSN Web Seamonkey was, well, monkeying around with the main site. But, for those who have been living under a rock, the 2006 meeting is coming up on Nov 9-12 up in Redmond, WA! For details, see the main WSN site and our own meeting page about special events. And there are a few things you should know about.

1) Registration: If you have not yet, you can register online as well as purchase neat WSN schwag.

2) Student Travel Awards: You can now apply online for student travel awards. Please read the eligibility guidelines carefully.

3) Auction Donations: And how do we fund student travel, you might ask? Why, though our fantastic auction! But, we NEED to know what we have to auction. So please, either encourage your professors, or donate yourself, and let us know with this handy dandy auction donation form!

4) Student Events: The evening of the 9th there will be a student workshop at the Seattle Aquarium on bringing together Deep Sea Biology and Ecology. Afterwards, we will be hosting the ever popular WSN student mixer, with behind the scenes tours of the aquarium and divers in the tanks! So come on out!

Update-a-palooza!
First off, Happy Halloween to all! We hope you're out there, dressed as your very favorite invertebrate/alga/fish! Points to the geekiest! We have a few updates/requests for you all.

1) The Student Symposium on Cross Ecosystem Interactions is a-go-go! Please, download this poster and plaster it all over your department!

2) While you're at it, why not post this workshop poster for our workshop about alternative careers to academia?

3) Also, we know how much everyone loves the auction, if only because it funds YOUR STUDENT TRAVEL TO THE MEETING. So, want some of that extra cash? Well, we need auction items! So, get some items, download and fill out the form which you'll give to us at the meeting. In the meantime, contact Chris Stallings and tell him what you will be bringing. Badger your faculty, family, and friends for items, as the better QUALITY we have, the better the price we can fetch - to fund you!

4) We are creating a WSN students email list. There will be an automatic "ADD ME!" form up soon. For now, if you want to be on it email Jarrett and you will be added.

5) We now have a WSN Student Discussion board - talk science, events, plans, give us feedback, or just find a ride to this year's WSN! Enjoy it!

6) And if you want to hear more from your friendly neighborhood WSN Student Committee, why not go over and sign up for our brand spanking new annoucement mailing list!

    11.09.2004

The 2004 WSN Annual Meeting was held, November 11-14, 2004 Rohnert Park, Sonoma County, CA. As usual, the student committee held a number of exciting events at this meeting, including a workshop, symposium, student mixer and auction.

Workshop: Academic Duty: Ever feel like there are a whole lot of unspoken rules about what you are supposed to do as a scientist? Wondering what to do the first time you are sent a grant to review How about what are your responsibilities as a post doc? Come to this workshop to at least hear that others share your angst, if not to find all the answers. The workshop will take place Thursday evening, followed by the student mixer.

Symposium: Scaling Ecology:   Ecologists are constantly struggling with the need to simplify nature such that it can be manipulated or modeled, while at the same time finding general truths about nature. When is it appropriate to take results gleaned at one spatial scale and use them to draw conclusions about larger (or smaller) spatial scales? Are there similar caveats for studies that span temporal scales? How can understanding gene regulation help explain population differences across degrees of latitude? And finally, how can we use ecological data to make policy recommendations? An august line-up of speakers provided their insights to these vexing questions.
    • Mark Denny - Stanford University
    • Danny Grunbaum - University of Washington
    • John Largier - SIO/UC Davis
    • Peter Mumby - University of Exeter
    • Trish Shulte - University of British Columbia
