WSN HOME ANNUAL MEETING AUCTION DONATIONS MAILING LIST ACTIVITY ARCHIVE COMMITTEE MEMBERS FAQ

Q: Is this the website for the Western Society of Naturalists?
A: Not exactly. This is the website for the student committee. Here you find information about what the student committee is doing this year, as well as an archive of what we've done in the past. For the main WSN site, click here http://www.wsn-online.org/

Q:I want to help the student committee, how do I get involved?
A:You had us at "I want to help"! To join the student committee, please go to our Committee Members page and contact any member.

Q:I want to donate money to help the student committee with their activities, can I do that?
A:You wonderful person. Please go here: http://www.wsn-online.org/membership.html and go to "Society Donation"... mention that it is for the student committee.

Q: Is the student mixer the same as the AAH?
A:No, but you should go to both.   The AAH is a well-organized party that the society throws to get everyone together during the meeting.  The Student Mixer is a bunch of people meeting at the same bar the night before the meeting.

Q:This will be my first WSN conference.  Should I go to the Presidential banquet, or is it stuffy?
A:If you can afford it, you should consider going.  The banquet includes faculty and speeches and stuff, but also graduate students and the auction and besides, the speeches are interesting.

Q:What is up with the business meeting, should I go to that?
A:Yes, you should.  The WSN is very much about students, and students are encouraged to go to the business meeting.  It is a great chance to see how a scientific society is run.

Q:So, where does this student committee thing come from, anyway?
A:Actually, it's all laid out right in the WSN bylaws. Here's the section that talks about us:

Article 4: Description of Student Committee.

4.2. Shall be in charge of organizing student activities at WSN annual meetings including, but not limited to, field trips, seminars, workshops, fundraisers, student-led symposia, and graduate student mixers, and coordinating these activities with the Program Committee.
4.3. Shall consist of a minimum of three WSN student members, and each representative may serve on the committee for up to 3 years or until they choose to stand down (provided they have served at least one year), as long as their WSN student membership is maintained.
4.4. New representatives shall be nominated by the committee and ratified by the WSN general membership at the next business meeting.
4.5. A committee chairperson shall be appointed by the committee on a rotating basis, with the sole responsibility of representing the student committee at the WSN Executive Committee and business meetings.
